Mobile Emission Spectroscopy begins ...

Today, the market requires quick and precise quality control of iron- and steel products of all industries. Before 1972, this was not imaginable at all. About 3% of all steel products came into the market as material mix-up or wrong allocation.

The differences of the material were not obvious for the processing industry because of missing quality control. This often caused processing errors with negative effect on the end product. In case safety components of the automotive industry were affected, product recalls were the consequences. These companies did not only have to bear enormous costs but also the related loss of image.

Minimal Deviations Decide on Quality

Very often, it was only one single product – like one rod out of 100 – what causes the trouble. The only difference from the other 99 could be recognized on the basis of minimal deviations in the element carbon.

This problem exists still today.

In the past, such quality controls could only be carried out with fixed laboratory spectrometers - a very labour-intensive and time-consuming procedure. Samples had to be cut off from the product to be analysed and brought to the instrument.

This is very different today.

Market Innovation

A milestone of mobile spectroscopy was set in 1972 with the development of the first mobile spectrometer by Belec company founder Willy Berstermann.

Over several stages of development, a high-technologic mobile spectrometer was produced. Today, it combines the best analysis accuracy with celerity and easy handling. The Belec Compact Port is the smallest spectrometer of its kind and can be carried and operated by one person only. Whether it is used for measurings inside vessels, on pipes at construction sites or on scrap yards – its flexibility and accuracy meets the customer’s requirements.
